Roof load - What do I need to consider?

Dachlast - Was muss ich beachten?
You want to buy a rooftop tent and are now wondering what roof load is all about? Don't worry, the topic is simpler than you think! Here you will learn everything about the differences between dynamic and static roof load and what you need to consider for your vehicle so that your adventure can start safely.

What is dynamic roof load?

The dynamic roof load is the maximum load that may be transported on your roof while driving. It is specified by the car manufacturer for each vehicle model and can usually be found in the vehicle registration document (Part I) under "permissible roof load" or in the owner's manual. If no information is listed there, you can also inquire with the manufacturer. This load specification refers to the weight of the rooftop tent itself, any luggage in the tent, and the roof rack.

It is important to strictly adhere to this specification, as additional forces (acceleration, braking, centrifugal forces in curves) act while driving, increasing the stress on the roof. Exceeding the dynamic roof load can not only lead to damage to the vehicle but also significantly impair driving safety. ⚠️ Most cars have a dynamic roof load of 50 to 100 kg.

What is static roof load?

The static roof load describes the maximum load that may rest on the roof when the vehicle is stationary. 🧍♂️ This is the most important value for using a rooftop tent. It is significantly higher than the dynamic roof load and is usually not explicitly stated by the manufacturer.

Why is the static load so much higher? When the vehicle is stationary, none of the dynamic forces that occur while driving are acting. The weight is distributed more evenly, and the body, especially the roof and roof frame, are designed to withstand many times the dynamic load when stationary. Imagine you couldn't enter your car without the roof collapsing. 😅 The static roof load is designed to safely support not only the rooftop tent but also the occupants (people, pets, etc.) inside.

How to calculate your roof load for the tent

To ensure your adventure is safe, you need to perform a simple calculation:

Dynamic roof load (from manufacturer) - self-weight of the rooftop tent = remaining load for the roof rack and additional luggage

Once you have set up your rooftop tent, the static load applies:

Weight of all persons + weight of the rooftop tent + weight of the roof rack ≤ the static roof load of your vehicle.

The exact value of the static roof load cannot be directly inquired from the manufacturer. Our OutdoorU rooftop tents are designed to safely distribute these loads. For most vehicles with a dynamic roof load of 75 kg, 2-3 people can easily sleep in the rooftop tent.

Important note

Are you unsure about your vehicle's dynamic roof load? Check your owner's manual or ask your dealer. Safety always comes first! ✅
